Brain dead is a horror film that was released to theaters in 1993. It's about a group of medical students who are told to carry out an experiment on a man who has been in "locked-in syndrome" for the last 25 years. At first they are driven by their thirst for knowledge, but soon realize that there is more at stake than just science. The film stars Bill Pullman, Meryl Streep, and Kevin Bacon. The film has two sequels: "Brain Dead Undead" and "Brain Dead, Again". The movie starts off with the admission of a rich man, Elliot Weston (Bill Pullman), into a hospital. Elliott wakes up, and realizes that he is in a hospital room and that his body is completely paralyzed. The only thing he can do is blink his eyes. At first, the nurses think he's faking it but after several tests by Dr. Benson (Meryl Streep), they realize he really does have "locked-in syndrome". Benson explains that it's a disease that has locked his brain in his body, and he can only blink his eyes to communicate. He is completely locked in, and must stay there for the rest of his life. While Benson is going over Elliott's file, she overhears Dr. Sibley (Kevin Bacon) telling a group of students about a man in Germany who had been in a coma for 25 years. Benson is intrigued by this man because she wants to find a cure for Elliott. Dr. Sibley agrees to let her use the patient as a test subject for a new drug they're developing called "Neuro-X", which is supposed to stimulate Elliot's brain. She wants to see if they can get him out of "locked-in syndrome". Dr. Sibley goes and talks to Elliott and after educating himself about the situation (he knew only that he was paralyzed and not much else), he agrees to let them experiment on him. The first time they try, Neuro-X has no effect on Elliott, but Dr. Sibley explains that it could take several days before it works. After some time, Benson decides it's worth trying again and she goes in with Dr. Sibley. Elliott doesn't react the same way he did the first time, which makes Dr. Sibley wonder if there is something wrong with the formula. Meanwhile, one of the other residents named Larry has decided to "borrow" some Neuro-X and try it on a cat and a monkey in order to see if there's anything wrong with it. The monkey dies after getting it while the cat survives but permanently loses its hearing and vision. Larry tries it out on himself and becomes very hyperactive and starts killing other residents in the hospital just for fun while also killing several other people that get in his way such as security guards or other doctors that might figure out what he did.
